Rollover Nights for Membership Level Retention. For members with multiple group memberships, how to allocate room night at the end of the year is crucial.
Room nights are crucial for hotel elite members to maintain or upgrade their status.
It is important to maximize the allocation of room night and understand which hotel group's loyalty programs allow for the rollover of "excess" qualifying room night.
The major hotel groups include IHG, Marriott, Hyatt, and Hilton. Only IHG and Hilton support the Rollover Nights.
IHG One Rewards
IHG Rewards Club allows Rollover Nights above the membership requirements of Gold, Platinum, and Diamond cards to be counted towards the next calendar year.
This applies only to qualifying room nights, not qualifying points. Qualifying points are another way to achieve elite membership status in IHG Rewards Club.
If you achieve elite membership based on qualifying room nights, the tier requirements are as follows:
- Silver Elite - 10 nights
- Gold Elite - 20 nights
- Platinum Elite - 40 nights
- Diamond Elite - 70 nights
Note: Rollover nights do not apply to Silver Elite members. For IHG Gold, Platinum, or Diamond Elite members, qualifying room nights beyond the tier requirements will rollover to the next year.
For example, if a Gold Elite member accumulates 28 nights in 23, they will have 8 (28-20=8) rollover nights at the start of 24.
Rollover nights can only be carried over to the following calendar year. This means that if a member accumulates 8 nights in 23 and carries them over to 24, and then accumulates 31 nights by the end of 24, only 3 (31-20-8) nights can be rolled over to 25. This is because rollover night are based on actual nights stayed in the current year. Rollover nights do not count towards milestone rewards.
For HG's milestone rewards, such as earning suite nights after staying 20 nights within a year, it means that if in 24, a member has 8 nights rolled over from the previous year and actually stays 15 nights, they will not unlock the milestone reward of 20 nights, even if they have a qualifying stay of 23 nights to maintain Gold membership. Rollover nights will only be displayed in the LHG Rewards account by early March.
Hilton Honors
Hilton Honors allows excess rollover night to roll over into the next membership year. This only applies to qualifying nights and does not apply to the number of stays or qualifying points, which are two additional ways to achieve Hilton Honors membership status.
If achieving elite membership status through qualifying nights, the level requirements are as follows:
- Silver: 10 nights
- Gold: 40 nights
- Diamond: 60 nights
The excess qualifying nights beyond the membership requirements will be rolled over on January 1st. If a Gold member accumulates 45 qualifying nights within a year, they will have 5 rollover nights starting at the beginning of 2024. Rollover nights can only be carried over once.
This means that if a Gold member rolls over 5 qualifying nights from 2023 to 2024 and accumulates 47 nights by the end of 2024, only 2 nights can be rolled over to 2025. This is because Hilton only calculates the actual number of nights stayed within the current year. Rollover nights do not count towards milestone rewards.
Hilton's 10,000-point milestone reward begins at night 40, with additional rewards every 10 nights and a bonus reward for hitting 60 nights.
If there are 5 rollover nights in 2024 and 35 nights stayed in 2024, the 40-night milestone of 10,000 points will not be unlocked, even if the conditions for Gold status upgrade/maintenance are met with 40 nights.
Rollover night do not count towards elite status benefits.
Diamond members who reach 60 nights within a year are eligible to gift Gold membership to friends and family.
Members who complete 100 nights can gift Diamond membership to friends and family.
If there are 5 rollover nights in 2024 and a total of 55 nights stayed that year, the "Gift a Friend a Free Gold Card" reward for reaching 60 nights will not be unlocked, even if the conditions for upgrading/maintaining Diamond membership with 60 nights are met.
BTW: Shangri-La also supports rollover night!
